2012 BMW M5 – New Teaser

Ahead of its M Festival debut, the new 2012 BMW M5 is teasing us once again. An M5 test mule was filmed during high-speed testing at the Nardò Ring in the south of Italy, an important part of the new BMW M5′s development program.
Between June 23 and 26th, 2011, BMW will host an M Festival to celebrate the 24hr race at the Nurburgring race track.
On this occasion, BMW invites fans around the world to have a look behind the scenes at the famous race and also visit the playground where every M car is developed and tested. Also, the new M5 and M3 EVO will be officially introduced.

Full details around the powerplant remain unknown, but we learned in the past that the 2012 BMW M5 is powered by an updated version of the S63 engine found in the BMW X5 M and X6 M. The 4.4-liter V8 twin-scroll powerplant will peak at somewhere in the 570-horsepower range and 530 lb-ft of torque. The 0-62 mph dash should take about 4.4 seconds,
The updated unit delivers both performance and efficiency significantly increased in comparison to the previous engine. Numerous drivetrain innovations and other enhancements have lead to a reduction in fuel consumption and emission levels by more than 25 percent.
The new engine is mated mated to a 7-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic. The combination of the new engine with M Drivelogic is supplemented by an Auto Start Stop function. A manual option will be offered for US customers.
The super sporty sedan goes on sale in early 2012 and it is rumored to have a base price around $100,000 mark.

New Video: BMW i8

BMW releases a new video of the 2014 BMW i8. The new video feature was partly filmed in Abu Dhabi where the first spy photos of the i8 emerged in late 2010.
Back in November, we were one of the very few and fortunate people to receive some co-driving time in a similar production vehicle, but the car was sporting the usual psychedelic camouflage. The car spotted at Abu Dhabi seem to feature a matte gray paint with a blue shade on the sides.
Developed under the Project i umbrella, Vision EfficientDynamics will make its debut as a production car at the end of 2013, with deliveries beginning in early 2014. The EfficientDynamics Concept features a 1.5 liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 163 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque all on its own.
According to Dr. Philip Koehn, Head of Vision EfficientDynamics project, his engineers were looking for the smallest engine produced by BMW and fortunately, an experimental unit was found on the premises. The diesel engined is aided by two electric engines.
First one, in a rear-end placement, produces a constant 33 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque. The second electric motor sits at the front of the car for a perfect weight distribution. The electric unit outputs 80 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. A temporary boost feature meant that for 30 seconds it could produce 112 horsepower or as much as 139 horsepower for just 10 seconds. The 1,450 kg sports car runs from 0-62 mph in only 4.8 seconds, performance that brings it at the same level as the current M3.
The car will charge from a conventional power socket in just 2.5 hours, and BMW indicated its fuel efficiency will approach 90 miles per gallon The car will have an electric-only driving range of about 31 miles, while diesel power extends the total range of the vehicle to up to 435 miles.
BMW i8 launches in 2014.

New Video Ad: BMW 335d

One of the two BMW diesels in the U.S., the 335d Sedan, gets promoted once again. With a production date ending in August of 2011, the BMW 335d will most likely be replaced when the new generation F30 3 Series comes to the U.S. in 2012.
Back in September 2010, in an interview with Automotive News, Jim O’Donnell, CEO of BMW North America, has reiterated that BMW remains committed to its diesel strategy in the U.S. even if more hybrid vehicles will emerge in the near future. As far as future plans, BMW is hoping for 10%-20% diesel penetration in U.S and also the introduction of new diesel vehicles on the market. The one mentioned by Mr. O’Donnell was a diesel variant of the next generation 5 Series, but unfortunately, no other news along that line have been released since.

The 2011 Super Bowl featured two BMW ads, including a 335d telling the story of clean diesel technology. Also, last year BMW 335d Sedan has been named to the Top 10 Green Cars list, affirming BMW’s commitment to sustainability.
BMW has been out of the American diesel market for around 20 years now and they marked their return in 2008  with the twin-sequential-turbocharged 3.0 liter diesel engine for the newly refreshed 335. BMW’s first 50-state-legal diesel delivers 265 hp at 4220 rpm, and an all too fun 425 lb-ft of torque between 1750 and 2250 rpm. Driving through a six-speed automatic transmission, this engine will propel the 335d from 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 sec while delivering 23 mpg city and 36 mpg on the highway.
During the tough recession last year, the $4,500 Eco-Credit has also helped boost the sales for the two diesel offerings with most of the dealers running out of 3 Series diesel sedans.

New Spy Video & Spyshots: R59 MINI Coupe and R58 Roadster

The upcoming MINI Coupe R59 and Roadster R58 have been spotted together during a testing session in Germany. The Coupe model is based on the John Cooper Works bodystyle, measuring 146.1 inches overall, 66.1 inches wide and 53.3 inches tall. It was designed as a two seater which brings out the idea of a MINI roadster vehicle rather than a coupe. Due to its rear-end design line, the MINI Coupe Concept lacks trunk space, the only storage space is behind the seats. The cargo space measures about 8.8 cubic feet and in the production model, it will be accessible through the a big hatch.
Inside, the MINI Coupe Concept sports an exclusive range of colors and materials. A three-spoke leather sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons enables the driver to steer precisely into bends and control the audio or communication functions with maximum ease. All other control units, in turn, are arranged ergonomically on the dashboard, taking their frequency of use into account.

Horizontal lines and air vents placed far to the outside emphasize the sheer width of the instrument panel and, at the same time, the generous style of the interior, the slender center console giving the driver and passenger maximum legroom.

The MINI Roadster is a two seater vehicle sporting a tight-fitting soft roof and innovative rear-end design. It is a new model that opens up new perspectives both in the context of the brand and in the segment of compact roadsters. The new two-seater measures 146.2 in length and 66.3 in width. Height of the car is 53.4.
Back in 2009, MINI said the Roadster  is powered by the 1.6-liter twin-scroll turbocharged engine already featured in the MINI Cooper S. Boasting direct gasoline injection, this power unit delivers maximum output of 175 horsepower and peak torque of 240 Nm/177 lb-ft increasing briefly with the Overboost function to an even more superior 260 Nm/192 lb-ft. MINI Coupe uses the an engine from JCW, a 1.6 liter four cylinder turbocharged engine which produces 211 horsepower and 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque.
Additional diesel engines will be offered in the lineup.
Regardless of the engine, both models feature a retractable rear spoiler that can be activated with the touch of a button increasing the downforce on the rear axle.
The Coupe will be a 2012 model year and will be followed by the MINI Roadster six months later.
A new spy video shows us the MINI Roadster during test drive sessions on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring.

Yet Another Rumor: BMW M-One – The Supercar We Dream About

Ready for another rumor? The restless Scott27 stirs up more controversy on the interwebs. According to the BMW insider, the designers are toying with the idea of a new M supercar, a true successor to the iconic M1. “The strategy has just begun and where it is at is a few sketches by the design department and ideas conjured around a conference table. We have no production plans yet,” said the insider.

The supercar is currently dubbed M-One because it could be the first of its kind in the new generation of BMW vehicles.  Scott27 remains vague about other details, but the use of CFRP is mentioned, new materials and parts that BMW is expected to use in their upcoming vehicles. The M1 Hommage mention is present as always with new speculations around a BMW supercar.

BMW M1 Hommage featured here

The rumor says an internal design sketch was created, a mixture of Vision ConnectedDrive and the upcoming 2014, but the drawing serves an unknown purpose.
“The sketch was developed entirely for a different purpose. But the idea did catch attention and since BMW did not focus on the design angle for the Connected Drive concept car they were taken aback when reaction to the car was very well received. But since the sketch caught senior attention they have added a roof and a higher windscreen to judge reaction and you could see the return of the concept this time as a coupe.  But it could form the car/s in question because of its bloodline to the original and hommage of the M1.”

Fingers-crossed BMW would build the car, when would it hit the road? “If greenlit, it will be after 2015″, says the source.

Our advice, take this rumor with a big grain of salt. In the past years, there have been extensive conversations and internal projects around a BMW supercar, but the company’s sustainable plans seem to rely on efficiency and future mobility, rather than an Audi R8 fighter.

LCD gauges coming for refreshed BMW 5 and 7 Series models

Autoblog reports on a new technology that will be fitted in the facelifted 5 and 7 Series models. BMW is getting ready to offer a fully configurable LCD gauge cluster, similar to what Mercedes introduced in the S-Class or Jaguar in their XJ flagship.
According to the publication, the development takes place as a mixed effort between the BMW Technology Office in Palo Alto, CA and the Munich development team. The new gauge cluster will display the standard dials for speed, revs, fuel and temp, but can be configured to show additional navigation, telematics and infotainment data depending on the driving mode.
Essentially, more driver-centric information will be displayed as needed or configured, another step towards the ConnectedDrive technology featured in the recently unveiled Vision Concept.

A BMW engineer said for Autoblog that BMW doesn’t want to rely on digital representations of analog gauges, but rather use a black canvas that can display information in a variety of ways. The customization process will be kept to a minimum though, a move that will allow the company to focus on usability.
The BMW 7 Series is due for a refresh in 2013, followed a year later by the F10 5 Series.

Would You Buy A Z4 Coupe?

Coupes have always had an important role in the history of BMW over the last 8 decades. It started with the 328 Karmann Coupe in pre-World War II Europe. The big coupe won the 1940 Mille Miglia and with its success would fall under the curtain of war spreading across Germany and the rest of Europe.
About 3 decades on an the world would be lucky enough to meet the BMW E9 coupe – which would go on to be a huge success in the European touring car series’, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and solidify BMW’s position as a genuine maker of modern, high performance coupes. The success of the roadgoing 3.0CSi of the early 1970′s was followed up by the more expensive, more luxurious and higher performing original E24 6 Series which would receive only minor cosmetic changes and a handful of engine upgrades over its 13 year production life culminating in the ultimate iteration with the first M6 in the history of BMW – powered by the venerable straight-six M88 engine.
The start of the 1990′s brought BMW’s biggest step forward in it’s big two door via the 8 Series. At its release in 1991, the 850i was the most expensive and most technically advanced vehicle in the history of the black, blue and white badge. In European spec, the 8 Series even came with an early version of the modern ASR system found on the F01 7 Series – allowing the driver to provide a few degrees of steering input to the rear wheels for improved handling at speed. Additionally, the variety of engines helped the 8 Series reach wider appeal with the M62 V8 engine of the 840i and the M70 V12 of the 850i.

With the demise of the ultra BMW coupe in the late 1990′s – many would think that it would not be until 2004 when the next 6 Series was released before BMW had another true coupe in the line-up.  However, that would be an incorrect statement. During BMW’s absence from the big coupe market the role was supplanted by the tiny but quite wide E36 M Coupe based upon original Z3 Coupe. With a petite, lithe figure from head-on – the car swelled to a gigantic rear with blistered wheel arches and a fat, quad exhaust. Perhaps the Kim Kardashian of the late 90′s car market?
Due to it’s proportions and roofline , the Z3-based M Coupe was nicknamed the “Clown Shoe” and unlike a Kardashian, the original M Coupe had gobs of talent with its European-spec S50B32 engine pumping out 321 German horsies. In 2001, with the introduction of the E46 M3, the little 3 door coupe reached full potential with the S54B32 tucked under the hood for 333HP on tap. To manage the power, a limited slip differential was added over the standard Z3 coupe. All in, the Z3 M Coupe was one of the most underrated German sports cars of the late 1990′s and early 2000′s and ironically, a car manufactured by engineers in their off-time with the intent of improving the torsional rigidity and overall performance of the original Z3 Convertible. By keeping the production and retooling costs to a minimum, the M Coupe was able to be brought to market – hence the sharing of many parts from the Z3 Convertible.
The original Z3 and M Coupe did not find a substantial market as this sort of shooting brake design was a far cry from what many expected from a BMW. However, as production wound down in 2002 – the car would quickly reach near-legend status with enthusiasts and the fastest S54-powered Coupes began fetching higher prices in the user car market.

Given the success of the original Z3 convertible, the Z4 replaced it in 2003 though the fate of the coupe version was yet to be determined. By 2005, a concept previewing the Z4 Coupe was released – giving enthusiasts hope for a new, lightweight baby BMW performance car. What followed did not disappoint – the Z4-based M Coupe took on the same S54 powerplant but adopted a much more elegant and sleek body, forgoing the enormous rump in favor of a more supple, tapered tail. The standard 3.0Si Coupe was a looker too and definitely no slouch with its 3.0L N52 engine with Valvetronic and 258 HP. However, as the global economy began to slow, the Z4 Coupe and M Coupe began to experience sales declines with incentives and “cash-in-trunk” deals being offered on the car just prior to the end of production. Despite the slowdown in sales, the performance and design of the second BMW shooting brake cannot be downplayed as one of the most fun and sexy BMW’s on sale in the last decade.
That said, will the Germans see it fit to grace the world with another small BMW coupe? We have the big 6 again in the F13 6 Series – but nothing to satisfy the lighter, smaller class of cars where performance isn’t entirely compromised by luxury. Yes, the 1 M Coupe satisfies that spot to a degree – but it does not have the sex appeal of a long-nosed sports car with a short wheel base and two kidney grills at the front. Frankly, the idea of either a coupe version of the Z4 sdrive35is or even an M-powered coupe pounding around with a S65 V8 under the hood – not too far off from a roadgoing Z4 GT3 perhaps?

The current Z4 sDrive35is has had its share of problems on the market given the type of incentives BMW is offering. Had BMW forgone the current Z4is and put an M-derived Z4 in its place – would sales perhaps be higher by better catering to the enthusiast market?
Included here are a few renderings from a post we had back in the fall hypothesizing what a Z4 Coupe could look like. It’s gorgeous and that’s not surprising – the current E89 Z4 Convertible is a gorgeous car too. Its wonderful with the long, sloping nose gliding back to the subtle yet still pronounced hips. If the E89 is such a big improvement and less polarizing over the E85 in droptop form – then how could an E89 coupe possibly be wrong?

BMW 3 Series Sedan Production end in October 2011

BMW announced today that production for the BMW 3 Series Sedan ends in October 2011. The only 3er diesel available in the U.S., the 335d, will also production in August.

BMW is preparing for the launch of the new F30 3 Series Sedan which goes on sale in Spring 2012. The new 3 Series is built on a new modular platform and design wise, it returns to the “slimmer look”, dynamic lines with squat proportions and short rear overhangs.

The typical proportions of a 3 Series remain, but the exterior design is more toned and muscular, bringing some the aggressiveness and design lines seen in the recent models, including the F10 5 Series. An expected move seen across the new BMW design language.

BMW is getting back to basics with clean uncluttered shapes, plus lower and wider kidney grille openings. The sedan model has a longer wheelbase, at least 1.5″ longer than the current generation. The F30 will sport a “pushing nose”, somewhat similar to the E89 Z4 front-end.
BMW will live under the umbrella of EfficientDynamics, and technologies like aerodynamically designed wheels, solar roof panel for extra energy efficiency in the use of interior controls, brake energy regeneration , stop-start technology, and pre-heating technology for the engine, gearbox and differential, will be incorporated into the new model.
Next generation 3-series engine options will include a full range of turbo and naturally aspirated 6-cylinder motors, 4-cylinder motors, and possibly even a new 3-cylinder motor.

The all-star BMW M3 will continue to sport the aggressive and super sporty bodystyle we have seen in the past. The new M3 will also feature a twin-turbo six-cylinder engine producing somewhere around 450 horsepower.

Exclusive: BMW 2 Series to include new 1 Series Coupe and Convertible

In 2010, BMW has filed for U.S. trademarks for 2 Series model designation. BMW reserved the trademark applications for the monikers 228, 230, and 235, similar to the 3 Series family designation. While BMW is known for filling far in advance for multiple trademarks and naming conventions, and some of them are never used, this time the new BMW badge will host the upcoming redesigned F22 1 Series Coupe and F23 Convertible.

Over the past months, the rumor of a new 2 Series family continued to appear on the interwebs, and a latest report from AutoBild follows the same path. According to the popular German magazine, when the new 1 Series Coupe and Convertible launch in 2014, respectively 2015, BMW will label them with the 2 Series designation. At this time, after checking with our sources, we can confirm the the report and the new BMW 2 Series family.

The renaming of the 1 Series Hatchback remains unknown at the moment, but more will be revealed in two weeks when the new model makes its world debut.

Report: BMW 1M to be produced only in 2011

TheDetroitBureau reports that the BMW 1M will be pulled after one year. Quoting Matt Russell, the U.S. M brand manager, the publication says the 1M production will run until December of this year. For Autoblog, BMW says less than 1,000 units will be built for the U.S. market.
[1M] “will be a one-year car,” said Matt Russell in an interview with TheDetroitBureau, a statement that hopefully stops many of the speculations seen around the web. Latest one came from our publication earlier in the day when a BMW source says the company is currently testing a 1M Convertible. If 1M Coupe production ends this year, it remains to be seen if the Leipzig production lines will keep the 1M Cabrio running through it.
The Detroit-based publication also reports that the Munich-based automaker hints that a future update may be in the works, but it will be based on the next generation 1 Series Coupe which goes on sale in 2013, putting the M version on the market by earliest 2015.

BMW X5 XDrive35d - 2010 Trial

The long awaited diesel engines are now available in America. Europe had more of diesel engine cars and the refined and clear diesel is to be found here as well.
The X5 35d is one such car which can handle the sudden acceleration predicament. The diesel engine can race up to 5000 rpm when the gear is shifted to neutral and before striking the rev limiter.
The engine is quieter than most users expects from a diesel car. Power delivery is also fairly good since the torque comes on hard and rapidly. Drivers generally do not have much complain against the starting of the car and the acceleration but the diesel engines are very low on horsepower than the gasoline engines.
The BMW X5 xDrive35d is very comfortable and importantly more efficient than the Audi Q7 TDI and the Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTec. It is also less expensive. The X5 35d is more fuel efficient and provides a rate of about 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
The car gives a good acceleration at 5000 rpm. The in-gear acceleration is moderated by the on-tap power remarkably. The BMW is more powerful than other cars because it is capable of giving smooth and quick response only by adding a little extra fuel. The driving experience comes out to be rather good one since the car does not make the journey very soft. The ride appears to be gentle while the transmission is pretty transparent. Though the steering appears to be quite heavy at low speed, yet it is excellent in its own way. The sun roof actually makes this car more appealing especially in Michigan. It is very difficult to get a good sunny day in the freezing city and when the drivers get it they do not want to miss the same while driving.
The interior of the X5 is designed according to the expectation of the buyers of BMW. Though it can be said that the interiors have almost become dated, since they are coming down the last few years, the appearance is impressive. The visibility is good and the driver can feel that the car is not bulky or heavy while controlling it.
The car's diesel engine is a little louder but the turbo is amazing and blends the car perfectly in the traffic and can actually pose the danger of over speeding. The driver must be careful because the car smoothly glides to a great speed with little push of the accelerator.
